A map to explore bacterial profiles.

Each point represents a bacterial species. UMAP places species with similar profiles near one another. Colors describe a property or association; changing the color does not change positions.

Two complementary views

Abundance: compare abundance profiles across samples, with balanced cohort contributions. Metagenomic functions: compare species-associated functional potential using metabolic pathways measured in DNA.

Reading the map and associations

UMAP neighborhoods are approximate. The axes and orientation have no direct biological interpretation; distances on the map are not proportional to differences between species. Projections may cover different species and cohorts.

Case–control effects are descriptive estimates based on the included cohorts. They are not evidence of causation or a diagnosis. Confounding factors and differences between studies may contribute to the observed associations.

A species without a usable profile for a projection is absent from that map; its profile remains accessible through search.
